Chargée d'Affaires, MonWHO

1/15/2014

To whom it may concern,

My name is Priyanka and I am the current Chargée D'Affaires for the Montréal Health Organization Simulation Conference. [www.monwho.org]

With the new year fast approaching, we are excited to announce that MonWHO 2014 will be taking place March 28-30, 2014.

The theme of this year’s simulation is “Access to Healthcare.” Inequity in access to medical services is an issue which plagues nations at all stages of development. From small rural communities to large urban metropolises, the ability to access healthcare such as medical professionals and proper health facilities is of paramount importance in caring for the sick and in maintaining the health of the person.

This year, we will incorporate our first official Crisis Committee to simulate a global health crisis during the conference, as well as a stronger career component in our Global Health Night with potential workshops on developing skills for global health diplomacy.

Most students who attend want to pursue a career along the lines of development, sciences, policy with pharmaceuticals or NGOS.. and our annual MonWHO simulation gives them the ability to gain exposure at such an early stage.

It would be great if you could share the above conference information along with the registration linkhttp://www.monwho.org/conference-registration/. Furthermore we have an early bird offer for our first 50 registrations.

The MA program in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory (CAST) at Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo and Brantford, Ontario, Canada) is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 academic year. Review of applications begins on January 15, 2014. Student slots are sometimes available as late as summer. However, it is best to apply as early as possible in order to facilitate funding arrangements.

Details are available at the following link:

http://wlu.ca/CAST

The MA in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory at Wilfrid Laurier University is an interdisciplinary graduate program situated at the interface of the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Rather than staying within the bounds of a single discipline, the program is designed for students interested in thinking about culture and society in ways that go beyond disciplinary boundaries.

The program offers three core courses: Colloquium, Core Theory, and Core Methods. In addition to these three core courses, the program offers elective courses in three inter-related fields:Globalization, Identity and Social Movements; Body Politics; andCultural Representation and Social Theory.

Recent elective courses include such topics as:

         The Social Body
Technologies of Gender: Female Bodies and Feminist Communities in Cyberspace
Pornographic Bodies and North American Cultural Discourse
Risk, Media and the Politics of Anxiety
Nostalgia and Exile: Memory, History, Identity
         Race, Gender and Imperialism
         Religion and Social Change
         Transforming Bodies
Theories of Multiculturalism and Intercultural Dialogue
Rethinking the Body via Deleuze and Guattari
         Embodiment, Affect and Subjectivity
Cultural Studies in Theory and Practice
         Hybrid Discourses, Discourses of Hybridity
         Power, Hegemony and Resistance
         Visuality and Cultural Analysis

The CAST program is a twelve-month program. Students may choose either a Major Research Paper option or a Coursework option. Students that choose the Major Research Paper produce a piece of original scholarship on a topic developed in close consultation with a faculty supervisor and a second reader. The length of the Major Research Paper is 50-70 pages.

Students in the program also have the opportunity to take courses offered in, and to contribute to the intellectual life of, other related graduate programs and Centres, such as: Social Justice and Community Engagement, Criminology, The Centre for Memory and Testimony Studies, Communications Studies, Sociology, Religion, and others.

All CAST students are guaranteed funding. Funding packages are competitive and generally come in the form of a Teaching Assistantship for the fall and winter semesters and an entrance scholarship is also offered; additional funding is available for applicants with exceptionally high grades, and occasionally in the form of Research Assistantships offered by individual faculty members. Students do not need to apply for funding separately. All students receive funding packages as part of their offer of admission. Students who have external funding such as OGS and SSHRC scholarships receive top-up funding from the university.

The CAST program is currently in the process of expanding. We anticipate being able to offer courses on the Brantford campus as well as the Waterloo campus as of September 2014. Thus, we anticipate being able to offer a wider range of courses, and a wider range of faculty from whom students may choose their supervisors. Students will be able to take course and choose supervisors from either or both campuses.

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly if you have any questions about this exciting interdisciplinary MA program in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory. It would be a pleasure to chat.

Questions may be addressed to:

Milo Sweedler, Director of CAST, at: msweedler@wlu.ca

Kofi Campbell, Faculty Member, CAST, at: kcampbell@wlu.ca, or

ASC launches Truth in Advertising PSA Creative Competition for next generation of ad industry

(Toronto – January 8, 2014) Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) is pleased today to announce the launch of the ASC PSA Creative Competition: Truth in Advertising Matters. The competition is open to full-time students currently enrolled at a Canadian university, college or other post- secondary institute in a marketing, advertising, communications, media, design or related program.

“We plan to launch a new campaign with the same theme of our original Truth in Advertising Matters PSAs,” said Linda J. Nagel, President and CEO of Advertising Standards Canada. “But this time, we’d like to have our creative developed by the next generation of the advertising industry.”

Using the theme Truth in Advertising Matters, entrants will submit three creative executions:

  1. 1)  30-second TV PSA (pdf of storyboard or script is also acceptable)
    2)  30-second radio PSA (pdf of script is also acceptable)
    3)  print creative that can be adapted for out-of-home or online media.

The competition will not only provide ASC with unique and fresh PSA creative, but will also raise awareness of ASC and industry’s commitment to advertising that is truthful, fair and accurate among the next generation of advertisers and marketers.

“Truth and credibility are essential in advertising,” added Linda J. Nagel. “We hope the creative minds of students across the country can help us share these important values with Canadians.”

Participants are asked to carefully review the rules and regulations and creative brief before submitting their creative. Submissions will also be reviewed against the provisions of
the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards (Code).

Students can submit their creative between January 27, 2014, and March 4, 2014. All submissions that meet an initial screening against the Code and comply with the rules and regulations will be posted online at truthinadmatters.com for public voting. The 20 finalists from public voting will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges to determine the five winners. Winners will receive cash scholarship prizes, with a first prize of $10,000. Updates about the contest will be provided through the website, Facebook and Twitter.

Advertising Standards Canada
Founded in 1957, ASC is the national independent advertising industry self-regulatory body committed to fostering public confidence in advertising. ASC members – leading advertisers, advertising agencies, media and suppliers to the advertising industry – are committed to supporting responsible and effective advertising self-regulation. A not-for-profit organization, ASC administers the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards, the principal instrument of

Advertising Standards Canada
